Propelled by strongly pre-sold IMAX showings across the country, the new Batman film "The Dark Knight" broke the box office record for a three-day opening, taking in over 155 million dollars domestically.
According to studio estimates, The Dark Knight took a US box office record of 155.34 million dollars in its opening weekend, topping the previous record of 151.1 million, set by Spider-Man 3 in May 2007. The studio, Warner Brothers predicted that the film would surpass the 200 million mark by the end of this week.
The Dark Knight also knocked out the Spider-Man 3 record for best opening in IMAX large-screen cinemas, raking in 6.2 million in the large format over Spidey 3's 4.7 million. And it also set a new highest opening day earnings record of 67.85 million dollars, besting Spider-Man 3's 59.8 million in 2007.
